Nest # 2 status and archive, 2011-12

Male band #4762. This male is 5 years old and this will be his first nest at Cape Royds. His mate showed up on Nov 13. His nest is surrounded by large rocks and will be well protected from the Skuas. This pair has been named by Ms Segadelli's class. They are Rose and Jack.

First egg: Nov 21, 2011

Second egg: First seen Nov 26, probably laid Nov 23 as that was the last day we saw the female.

This nest failed to hatch one chick this year

Nov 12, Male is alone and waiting for the female. Nov 13, Female has arrived, both adults are near the nest. No eggs. Nov 14,Both adults are near the nest. No eggs. Nov 15, Both adults are near the nest. No eggs.
 Nov 16, Both adults are near the nest. No eggs.  Nov 17, Both adults are near the nest. No eggs.  Nov 18, Both adults are near the nest. No eggs yet.  Nov 19, Both adults are near the nest. No eggs yet.
   
  Nov 20, Both adults are near the nest. No eggs yet, we are worried this nest may not produce eggs.  Nov 21, Yeah ! ! Rose has laid the first egg and she is on the nest. We are happy this has happened.  Nov 22, Rose is on the nest and there is still only one egg.  Nov 23, Rose is on the nest and there is still only one egg. There should be two by now, we will wait one more day.
   
Nov 24, Storm in the colony, no picture. We are tent-bound.  Nov 25, The male is on the nest, we can not see eggs today so still don't know if there is one or two.  Nov 26, YEAH there are two eggs. The male is on the nest.  Nov 27, The male is on the nest, there are two eggs.
   
  Nov 28, The male is on the nest, there are two eggs.  Nov 29, The male is on the nest, there are two eggs.  Nov 30, The male is on the nest, there are two eggs. Dec 1, Jack is on the nest, there are two eggs.
 
Dec 2, Jack is on the nest, there are two eggs. Dec 3, Jack is on the nest, there are two eggs. Dec 4, Jack is on the nest, there are two eggs. Dec 5, Rose has returned and is on the nest, there are two eggs.

Dec 22, Rose is on the nest, there are two eggs. Dec 23, Rose is on the nest, and it has been 19 days since Jack was here. She has been without food or water the whole time. It looks like she is getting ready to leave. This is sad. Dec 24, Our worst fears have occured. Rose is gone, Jack did not return in time. The eggs are gone and another penguin has taken over the nest. It is neither Rose nor Jack. This is so sad. It will be interesting to see if Jack returns this year or perhaps next year. I will continue to look for him and if he shows up, I will add a picture. Otherwise this is our last picture for this nest.
 

Dec 30, Jack is back. We are glad to see he is unharmed, but sorry there willb eno chicks in this nest this season. This is probably Rose, but we do not know for sure.
