Adelie Penguin Close up of Adelie Penguin head. Notice the strong beak, and white eye ring.
Cape Royds. Adelie breeding colony is located where you see the white rocks. They are white from years of guano build up. The hut is Shackelton's hut, built by his men in the early 1900's
An Adelie penguin on her nest in the shadow of Mt Erebus, an active volcano on Ross Island. The lava lake in the crater is a bubbling mass of molten rock which erupts on a regular basis spewing lava into the air. The plume is visible from anywhere on the island and is mostly water vapor and carbon dioxide.
Adelie breeding group overlooking a frozen Ross Sea with the continent of Antarctica in the background. Adelie penguin asleep
A group of nesting Adelies on the flat. Nests are about 1 meter apart measured center to center. Just far enough away so neighbors will not peck at each other. An empty Adelie nest. Notice the white lines. Adelies squirt their guano in a stream away from the nest and egg. Another reason why the next closest nest is about 1 meter away.
