Parents feed their chicks by regurgitating food. The demand for food will increase in about 2 weeks so that both parents will have to forage, leaving the chick alone in groups with other chicks. New born chicks stay close to the incubation pouch. Notice the chick stays on top of the parent's feet, much warmer than the rocks.
Chicks learn to tap on the parents beak to get food. One week old today and they have grown. The parent has trouble keeping them both warm in the incubation pouch.
Display behaviour This pair lost their eggs to the Skua, but stay around the nest for a few days.
Recognition display of a returning and greeting mate. They will exchange places on the nest in a few minutes. Skua attack on nesting Adelie penguins. This attack was unsuccessful. Up against the rocks is a good place to build a nest.
Tobogganing, a fast way for Adelie penguins to travel over the ice. The ice is breaking up near shore. Thus, Adelies have a hard time negotiating the pressure ridges on their way out to open water for feeding.
